Silencing the Guns in Sudan: An Interfaith Call for Peace and Ceasefire
Sudan is facing one of the gravest humanitarian crises in the world today. Since April 2023, conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has left millions displaced, communities besieged, and entire regions on the brink of famine. Over 12 million people have been forced from their homes, with nearly half the country struggling with acute food insecurity. The destruction of religious and cultural sites, alongside targeted attacks on civilians, has further torn at the social fabric of Sudan.
In response to this unfolding tragedy, Al-Itidaal Organization, in partnership with the African Council of Religious Leaders–Religions for Peace (ACRL–RfP), will host a multi-stakeholder interfaith conference in Nairobi, Kenya, on 22 September 2025, in commemoration of the International Day of Peace.
Themed “Silencing the Guns in Sudan: An Interfaith Call for Peace and Ceasefire”, the conference will bring together Sudanese nationals, African religious leaders, policymakers, peace actors, and civil society representatives. It will serve both as a continental day of prayer and a consultative dialogue platform to chart pathways for peace, humanitarian access, and social cohesion in Sudan.
Key discussions will focus on:
- Addressing gender-based violence and protecting vulnerable groups.
- Securing humanitarian corridors for aid delivery.
- Combating hate speech and disinformation.
- Amplifying the voices and protection needs of displaced persons.
The International Day of Peace reminds us that silence in the face of suffering is not an option. By standing together—faith communities, civic leaders, and global citizens—we can amplify the call to end the war in Sudan and open space for reconciliation and healing.
